Sicily-Day 3

If anyone has ever watched the Amazing Race, then this day was exactly like one of those episodes...we made our first train of the day by a hairsbreath! This took us around Mt. Etna...at Giarre we got off to find a train back to Catania...only to discover there was none! And we had to get back to Catania to catch anther train back to the ferry for Malta! During the middle of our crisis (the people working in the station didn't have much english) Andrea rang and explained to the Sicilians our problem. Would you believe that the Sicilians then stopped a train for us? Amazing, truly amazing.

Sicily-Day 2

After a typical Italian breakfast of Brioche and cuppaccino we headed to Catania train station. We had hoped to go to Agrigento to see the valley of the temples, however the trip would have taken three hours one way. Instead we headed to the beautiful coastal city of Taormina...

We walked up the steepest hills in existence to the town of Taormina...

The botanical gardens at the top provided refreshment and a wonderful place to view the coastline of Taormina. The gardens had an amazing variety of flowering plants and structures.

Then we visited the ruins of a Greek Theatre-remember to say you are a history student to get free admission!

Sicily-Day 1

We left Malta at an abominably early time of 5am. The trip was 3 hours to Catania. On our first day we decided to walk around the huge open air markets north of Piazza de Duomo where I bought a scarf and a bracelet.

That night we celebrated St.Patricks at a local bar and had a great time drinking Martini Spritzs. The locals were very friendly and the atmosphere in the streets festive and alive.

Who was there?
Marcus (German) Julian (Canadian) Addie (Kentucky) Brittany (Tennessee) Charlie (Florida) Jackie (Canadian)

Birkikara Markets

Today we walked to a local open air market in Birkikara-the produce was mainly clothes and some really smelly fish. I also met a girl with a similar scar to mine!

Popeyes Village

Julian and myself took Bus 45 to the city of Mellieha, there we walked FOREVER to get to the remains of Popeye's Village-a film set left over from the movie of 20 years ago...only to find that the place was closed! No problem, we watched the sun sink below the ocean from the cliffs near by.
